Sublimation Explained: What It Is and Why It Works So Well for Sportswear and Dancewear
What is sublimation?
- The design is permanently embedded into the fabric
- There’s no extra layer on the surface
- The fabric remains lightweight and breathable.
How Does Sublimation Work?
Sublimation is a multi-step process, and while the technology behind it is clever, the end goal is simple — to create a garment where the design is fully part of the fabric, not sitting on top of it.
Everything starts with the design. Your artwork is carefully prepared and laid out digitally so it fits each garment panel exactly. Because sublimation allows for all-over colour and patterns, this stage is especially important. Once the design is ready, it is printed onto specialist paper on a large format printer using sublimation inks.
We then use a rotary heat press, which uses controlled heat and pressure to transfer the design from the paper into the fabric panels that are placed over the printed shapes.
Under heat, the sublimation inks turn into a gas and permanently dye the fibres of the fabric. This leaves the design fully embedded into the fabric. There’s no texture on the surface — just smooth, lightweight fabric with vibrant colour.
The printed panels are then ready to be sewn and finished into the final garment.
Because the design is part of the fabric, sublimated garments are ideal for activities that involve movement, stretching and frequent washing.
Why Sublimation Is So Popular for Sportswear
Sublimation has become increasingly popular in sportswear, and for good reason. It offers a combination of performance, comfort and creative freedom that’s hard to match.
Lightweight and Comfortable
Because there’s no added layer of print, sublimated garments stay light and breathable. This makes them ideal for active use, where comfort really matters.
Designed for Movement
The design is dyed directly into the fabric, meaning it stretches and moves naturally with the garment. This makes sublimation perfect for sports kits where flexibility and freedom of movement are essential.
Long-Lasting and Hard-Wearing
With no surface print to wear away, the designs will remain vibrant wash after wash.
Complete Creative Freedom
Because the design is built into the fabric itself, there are no real restrictions on colour or layout. Logos, patterns, gradients and colour combinations can flow seamlessly across the garment, allowing teams to create a truly individual look that will make them stand out.
One-Off Orders and Ongoing Kits
Just like everything we do, sublimated garments don’t have to be complicated.
Whether you’re ordering:
- A small number of garments to get started
- Replacement items later on
- Or a full team or school kit
We’ll help you find a solution that works for you.
